I finally did it!

And then I fired myself.

Sorry for ghosting you 👻

It’s been a long time since my last update - partly because I’ve been busy, but mostly because I overthink what to write, so I’ll try to get over myself, and share a bit!

Shavuos Challenge - 5785

For the 5th year I had the zchut to contribute comics to the SCP Shavuos Challenge! Each time brings in a few new sign-ups, so welcome to the club!

Dream Come True

For the first time I was published as an illustrator/author combo! That’s something I’ve been dreaming would happen since I was a kid. The book is the final product of what started in the script scramble posts, if you followed those.

Two points of interest:

When all options are open, you’re not doing anything.

This was hands-down one of my most graceful recoveries from an unexpected bump. I committed to a direction, made myself a time-line, and came out with a new book on the shelves! I used to get stuck in analysis-paralysis, and I’m really proud of how I handled this one.

I’m not always right. ☹️

I thought it was cautious business-people that were responsible for the monotony in the kosher-comics market, and if I only had a chance, I’d show them all that frum readers were secretly clamouring for zany, avant-garde comics.

Well, I got my chance while working on this book, and sent out a poll to prove, once and for all, that a sublime, artsy cover would appeal more than some slapped together movie-poster style one. Turns out not. I suppose the business folks actually have a pretty good sense of what sells!

A friend once said to me: “Dov, you’re trying to offer people fancy french cuisine, when all they want is potato kugel.” Fine.

You can find the book here:

Then I fired myself

While waiting for the international acclaim, and buckets of money to rain down… I still need to feed my family.

I tried to start another book, but that one didn’t get off the ground, and so I decided to dial back my freelance illustrating expeditions, and take a half-time job. Don’t worry though! With the other half of my time, I’m still trying to get those innovative comics off the ground!

(Can I interest you in a fondue savoyarde to go with your kugel, sir?)

School secretary by day… working on the other half.

And in the other other half…

This comic comes to mind rather often.

I’m also trying to get my driver’s licence.

If you’ve been following me for a while it shouldn’t surprise you that I got a racing wheel and driving simulator to help with that.

Realistically, I can’t juggle all these endeavours at the same time, and driving seems to be the most “finishable” so I’m just waiting to be done with that. Feel free to pass on any pro driving tips you may have!

That’s it for now!
